delta and dawn:
Mother and Baby
Whales’ journey
by Stefanie Cruz,

Good Day Sacramento
news anchor Stefanie
Cruz never thought of
herself as an author but
found the inspiration
to write her new local
children’s book, Delta
and Dawn: Mother and
Baby Whales’ Journey,
illustrated by awardwinning
muralist Lily
Toppenberg, while
visiting the Sacramento-
San Joaquin River Delta
with her family in hopes
of seeing last year’s
stranded whales, Delta
and Dawn.
Touched by how
the community came
together while trying to
assist the whales, a story
broadcast heavily over
both local and national
news, Cruz chronicles
the whales’ journey in
her book, often reflecting
on the mother and child
relationship.
“This is a bond that
all animals and humans
have in common, and is
important to share with
children to deepen their
understanding about
science and nature,” says
Cruz. – Andrea Stuart
